The castle of Châteaugiron
Discover the castle of Châteaugiron
Located in the town of Châteaugiron, in France, the Château de Châteaugiron is a medieval fortress that testifies to the architecture of the twelfth to the eighteenth century. This remarkable construction was renovated in the fifteenth century by Jean de Derval, leaving important remains to this day.
With six towers, an entrance gatehouse with a drawbridge and a stately home, the castle was erected in order to defend the steps of the Duchy of Brittany and protect Rennes, its capital. Over the years, it was unfortunately regularly besieged and looted between 1588 and 1594 by the troops of the League.
However, in the eighteenth century, the castle was transformed into a pleasure residence in the classical taste, marking an architectural transition. This metamorphosis took place in 1701, giving the castle a new look full of grace and elegance.
Today, in addition to its historical value, the castle houses the Musée des Sculpteurs Gourdel, offering visitors a unique opportunity to discover exceptional sculptures.
