The Château de Boussay
The Château de Boussay
The Château de Boussay, listed as a historical monument since 1957, stands majestically in the middle of the water moat, surrounded by the history and natural beauty of the Indre-et-Loire region. Owned for generations by the de Becdelièvre family, this castle represents a harmonious blend of various architectural periods.
A Rich and Fascinating History
The history of the Château de Boussay dates back to around 1060. It first belonged to the Payen family, before passing into the hands of the Menou family in the 14th century, and finally to the Becdelièvre family. This castle was never sold, which is rare enough to be noted. Renaud de Payen, the first recorded lord of Boussay, lived in 1190, marking the beginning of a rich and diverse history.
Composite & Unique Architecture
The architecture of the Château de Boussay is a living testimony to several centuries of history. The structure juxtaposes a fifteenth-century machicolation tower, a seventeenth-century Mansard wing, and an eighteenth-century wing. These distinct elements form an original and harmonious whole, offering a window into the evolution of French architecture through the ages.
An accessible historical monument
Although the castle is privately owned, its grounds are open to visitors freely, allowing visitors to appreciate the castle's outdoor beauty and historic setting. The water moat adds a touch of majesty and mystery to the entire site.
