The Château d'Angerville: A hidden gem in the heart of Normandy
The Château d'Angerville (76280)
Nestled in a peaceful and green setting, the Château d'Angerville at Domaine des Hellandes is a real hidden gem in the Normandy countryside. Built in the twentieth century on the site of the stronghold of the Hellandes, the castle offers a reception area in the park of the estate and offers accommodation in room rental, full board, half board or night + breakfast.
The fief of the Hellandes is sitting on the communes of Manéglise and Angerville l'Orcher since the Middle Ages. The lordship of Hellande extended over several communes such as Lamberville, Bréauté or Saint-Aignan sur Ry. The oldest known lord, Jehan of Hellande, participated in the 1099 crusade in Jerusalem. After him, a line of knights devoted to the kings of France succeeded, some of whom occupied high offices like Robert de Hellande, bailiff of Rouen, chamberlain of the king and died at Azincourt in 1415.
A second castle was built in the seventeenth century by the Desmares du Tournay family, at a time when the lordship, for lack of "male" Hellande descendants, had been sold to the latter. However, this family will know the same fate as the Hellande and the ascendant line of the Desmares will not arrive until the revolution. The castle and its neighboring farms will be separated between the grandchildren born of alliances and will enrich the heritage of families from the bourgeoisie of the trade.
It was Charles Lévesques, a fabric merchant, who razed the old seigneurial manor house to build a more modern castle in 1904, the current Château d'Angerville. Nevertheless, some older elements exist with the barn built in 1738 or elements of walls and farms dated from the seventeenth century. Today, the castle is an ideal place to stay to discover Normandy and its rich historical heritage.
